SLM began in a small garage on The Green, St. Leonards-on-Sea in 1958, purchased by father and son team Graham and Brian Wakeford, after Brian completed his engineering training in Bristol and Newbury, Berkshire. After opening for business on the 1st January 1959, SLM quickly expanded, with Brian and Graham being joined by John, Brian's brother.
Our excellent standard of customer service led to more business than the one dealership could handle, and in 1973, our main Fiat garage opened, along with a series of petrol stations in Bexhill.
In 1979, SLM bought Sidney Motors, which after originally being a Fiat dealership became a Toyota site in 1983. In 1986 SLM relocated to our current head office at Churchwood Drive and in 1994, our Nissan dealership opened alongside the Fiat dealership, with a Vauxhall site launching shortly afterwards in 1995.
The original Toyota dealership relocated to the same site as the Vauxhall dealership in 2005, with a second site being acquired in Uckfield. In 2011, we opened our first dealership in Tunbridge Wells which specialised with Vauxhall, and in 2013, Sussex Used Cars was launched as a specialist used car site in Bexhill.
In 2017, SLM expanded into East Anglia after acquiring Dingles Motor Group, with three centres in Attleborough, Lowestoft and Norwich. These centres are dealerships for Hyundai, Lexus and Toyota.
